If you could read just one article about how to improve your lacrosse game in ways your coach may not have told you about this is it! As I see it, no matter who your coach is, and no matter how talented you are, there are 6 major reasons why you might not be the best lacrosse player you could be:
So what’s the problem?Could it be a lack of preparation? Right here, I will let you in on a few secrets that I have been using over the past 5 seasons that really improve player performance. They are tried and true, and they will work for anyone - even you! Stick work:Knowing how to catch, throw, and cradle are not enough… even at the youth level these days. Stick work is an art. It needs to be worked at. Knowing the feel of the ball in the sweet spot is very important. Without it, you simply cannot compete. With it, you will be a much more valuable player on your team. I have written an article about maximizing stick skills. Read it. It is the best way I know how to increase your stick The secret is challenging the coordination center in your brain (the cerebellum) and doing so repeatedly and with increasing difficulty of drills. I have a step by step plan that does this over a 40 day period. This plan will change the way you play forever. Click here to go to that article Conditioning:Sports Specific and Cross Training are becoming more and more important as the level of play elevates. Training out of season should include: playing other sports, running, resistance training, and prevention of injuries. There is an old myth that says that teenagers should not lift weights because it will “stunt their growth”. I am wondering where the proof is of that? Where is the research that says that proper lifting techniques hurt kids? It’s not out there. It’s a myth. To learn more about effective cross training, read here. You are prone to injuries because you keep playing and training and working out. Over training and lack or rest plagues young players in every sport. Take some time, stay a while, read some of the articles on this site. The one most people like to read as about shin splints. Click here for a great article on that. Team Play:Lacrosse is the ultimate team sport. If you have your head wrapped around getting a lot of attention and being the big star and having coaches recruit you because you stand out on your team, I suggest you get that out of your head. Timing is everything, and learning to be a team player is that plus infinity. The ball never gets tired. Your legs do. Get open. Catch the ball, and pass it before a defender knows you have it. Change the direction of the flow of the ball as much as possible. Think of your team, and never about yourself - only about what you can do for your team. That’s when you can become a truly great player. I have not written an article on this subject, but, I will. Keep an eye on the featured articles on this site. Sign up for our newsletter. Keep in touch. I will.I’ll send it to you as soon at I can. Choosing your Stick:Pricing: I am of the mind, that in life, there are a few things where you just get what you pay for. This is one of those things. Less expensive sticks are priced that way for a reason. Girl’s lacrosse has restrictions on pocket size. Pocket size can have a huge effect on the player’s ability to play- and thus their confidence. Therefore, be careful in choosing a stick. This could color your player’s future more than you know. <Read more> Nutrition:Garbage in means garbage out. Wanna play like junk? Eat Junk! Wanna play like a studette? Eat the right food! Our food sources are depleted of nutrients these days due to over farming. Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Reduce or eliminate processed and fried foods. Take a multiple vitamin- one you buy at the health food store. Mass produced vitamins like Centrum are not easily digestible. Take the time to get a good one. Learn more about how your stickwork will save you…here. What others have said regarding “Your Stickwork will Save You!”“I love it! Love it! Love it! Now how do I get all the Monte Vista girls to do it?” -Coach Dearborn A great way for girls to advance from a beginner level to an advanced level. It really teaches girls how to 'feel' the ball in their stick!!! Mandatory for every player....what a great learning tool!!!! Noemi Hites “I've been teaching stick rudiments for 25 years - both goalies and field players. I think this is such an important aspect of teaching the game fundamentals - so many players and coaches teach only one way - maybe two. Perhaps you've taken them to the extreme with having 12 (I teach 4......8 if you consider each side). But, still, there is extreme value in your teaching these. The value is basically in getting the players to understand the importance of being able to manipulate their sticks with ease - and the more ways they can manipulate it the better. HENCE - YOUR STICK WORK WILL SAVE YOU! I used to say to the players that your stick should become the mechanical and mental extension of your arm…. All in all - greatvideo … just the way it is. There is real value in what you've put together here so very nice job! Alexa too!!!!!!! -Coach Bob Watched it last nite and it was fantastic!! Great way to get girls to improve their skills, but on a step by step basis. Very effective teaching techniques to get the girls to get comfortable with the stick and ball. -PT- coach/ref "I learned more in an hour from the DVD than I had in 4 years of lacrosse. There was such a noticeable difference in my stickwork it was amazing. If you want to succeed as a player you should really try 1-12." -A.R., varsity player Click here to see what others have said about your stickwork will save you!!
